We are here to grow the game of volleyball in State College and help to continue to build a volleyball community for our area. Please keep this in mind throughout the league.
Grass Doubles Rules
We will be following the AVP rules for doubles play. Here is a link the AVP rules.
Summary of Important Rules:
- Court Size- Short court.
- Men will play on a Men’s height net. Women will play on a Women’s height net.
- Let serve (ball touching the net during service) is legal.
- Rally scoring.
- Open handed tip or dinks are considered a fault and not allowed.
- Overhand pass (sets) which have a trajectory not perpendicular to the line of the shoulders over the net are not allowed. (Sets over the net must be perpendicular)
- Blocks count as one of the team’s allowed three contacts.
- If a player decides to set the ball in case of off-speed attack, defense or setting, the action must be “clean.” Please see this video for a description of a clean hand set: Hand Setting Explanation. Pools may decide how tightly they would like to call hand sets at the beginning of pool play each night.
League Format:
- Men and Women will have their own league with their individual points.
- Each week, players are put into groups of 6 depending on your record the prior week.
- Pools will be put in order of level. A will be the top pool, B would be the second pool, etc.
- Players in each pool will play games with a different partner against different opponents in order to determine their total points earned for each week.
- Total points earned in all of your pool games at the end of the night will be used to rank each player each night. Players are ranked 1-6 at the end of the night based on total points earned (Seed will be used as a tie breaker).
- The top two players from each pool will move up to the higher pool the next week. The middle two players will stay in that pool. The bottom two players will move down to a lower pool. If there is a pool of 4 or 5, the players missing a night will be excluded. If one player has missed 2 or more weeks in a row, they will be dropped down to the lower pool and the bottom player from the night will move down as well. If two players move down due to missed weeks, then the remaining players will stay or move up.
- Players 1-4 in the top pool will stay for the next week. Players 3 – 6 in the bottom pool will stay until next week.
- If there are 6 players, you will play 4 games to 21. If 5, you will play 4 games to 21. If 4, you will play 3 games to 25.
- If you miss a week, you will stay in the same pool, but be moved down to the 5th or 6th seed the following week depending on if another player misses. If you miss a second week in a row, you will drop down to a lower pool. This allows some flexibility with schedules.
If there are not 4 people in a pool for a night, a sub may fill in for that pool and their points will not count. - June 23rd will begin the season. June 16th will be a seeding event, and June 9th will be pickup.
Here is a sample pool sheet. Numbers at the top indicate which player would play with which.

League Scoring and Pools:
- At the end of each night of play, players will be ranked 1-6 in each pool.
- All players will then be put into order based on pool and rank for the night and will earn points based on seeding. The number of points you earn will be determined by the number of players in the league.
- You will earn points for the position that you ended in that night. (Even if you are not there)
- We will be using overall points throughout the league to format an end of season tournament on the last night. We will provide more details later on about this, but there will be advantages to having the most points.
- Points and scores will be kept track of on the Grass Doubles Standings sheet.
